Therefore, it is good to have some fundamental knowledge of how printing works, particularly offset printing, which is one of the most widely used printing technologies.
Offset printing is so well known among printing service companies and customers because for large volumes, it turns out to be cheaper than alternative methods. Hence for bulk orders any good printing company would advise you to opt for offset printing.
This printing technique uses oil-based ink, which is not soluble in water. Its so called because in this process, images are not transported directly from the plates to the paper but this is done using rubber blankets as a medium.
The first step is developing the images. Previously the images were produced by creating film negatives and were then transmitted to aluminum printing plates. In the current times, the printers can make use of the image setting system for preparing the plates directly. After this, the plate is attached to a cylinder with the proper side facing upwards. Thereafter water, and then ink, is spread on the image plates. The image gets the ink while the rest of the area gets a thin film of water, which makes sure that the ink does not spread beyond the images.
After painting it with ink, the image is put on a rubber blanket which is on a different cylinder, leading the image to be reversed. The image is now printed with its right side facing up by cutting sheets of papers into correct size and placing them on a third cylinder.
The job of printing is completed by the printing company by providing the final touches to the printed sheets using staples or paste or in any other way as per the needs of the client.
Most common form of offset printing is derived from the photo offset operation, which uses photosensitive chemicals and photographic techniques to transmit pictures and type from source materials to printing plates. The source materials may be the current photographic print and typeset text. However, it is more common, with the prevalence of computers and digital images, that the master copy exists only as data in a digital printing system.
