The core aim of a retail space is to provide an environment in which the retailer can effectively advertise and sell goods to the customers, and where the consumers can buy those products with ease. This is the reason why the design of retail spaces and stores, that is the retail design, is comprised of aspects of graphic design, ergonomics and marketing, along with the typical features of interior designing and architecture.

While designing a retail space, it is crucial that the specific needs of that particular retail space are taken into account. For instance, the design needs for a supermarket would differ radically from those for an art gallery. When the design is being made, a number of aspects have to be taken note of, like the type of items on sale, the role played by the sales men in the sale of the goods and the amount of the items that have to be put on display. Also, in some retail areas, items just have to be exhibited, whereas in others, the buyers would also prefer to test the items in the store. The retail design chosen would hence differ accordingly.

Along with the technical details of a retail design, the attractiveness of the retail space from the point of view of the customers should also be considered. It is critical that the retail space is hospitable towards the buyers and inspires them to make purchases on stepping into the shop. The retail design plays a significant role in this. The store should also have promotions inside the shop that encourages the consumers to purchase the goods exhibited in the store.

Moreover, the retail area should have a long lasting impression on the mind of the customers, and must encourage them to come back and make further purchases. Thus, a professional retail designer must focus adequately on the ambience of the retail space that will make sure that the buyers enjoy and have a great shopping experience.

To ensure that the retail design is a success, the designer should be aware of basics on optimal utilisation of space, promotion and psychology of the customers. Both the customer and the retail designer should have some know how of these areas, so that the client can tell the precise requirements to the designer and the designer can efficaciously satisfy the needs of the client.

Designing the store interior carefully is extremely critical, but there is one other thing that should be taken into consideration. The exterior must also be able to attract the potential customers and inspire them to enter the store and look at the goods.
